This is a 1919 San Francisco minted Indian head buffulo nickel in G/VG condition. The buffalo nickel was issued from 1913 through 1938. The Buffalo nickel was designed by James Fraser who modeled the nickel after Black Diamond, a 1500 pound Bison owned by the New York Zoological Gardens.On March 4, 1913, coins from the first bag, of the new buffallo nickel design, to go into circulation were presented to outgoing President Taft and 33 Indian chiefs at the groundbreaking ceremonies for the National Memorial to the North American Indian at Fort Wadsworth, New York.
