VERVE SUITE LIMITED EDITION LITHOGRAPH BY PABLO PICASSOThis lithograph by Pablo Picasso from the Verve Suite depicts a young maiden with flowers in her hair who smiles at a man who is seated cross legged looking at her with a smile. This piece is dated in the plate by the artist and was printed September 15th, 1954 by Mourlot Freres, Paris. It was produced in a limited open edition and comes with a certificate of authenticity on verso. The framed dimensions of this piece are 24"h x 28"w. The verve series is based on a series of drawings that Picasso did in Vallauris, France. The series is best described by Teriade, a writer, critic, and art collector who knew Picasso personally. "Last winter, from mid-December to the end of January 1954 Picasso was working indefatigably on this series of drawings, which rank among the finest, boldest, most poignantly human of all he has produced in the course of his long and brilliant career." Pablo Picasso (1881-1973)was a Spanish painter, ceramicist and sculptor who is widely acknowledged to be the most important artist of the 20th century. A long-lived and highly prolific artist, he experimented with a wide range of styles and themes throughout his career. Among Picassos many contributions to the history of art, perhaps his most important include pioneering (with fellow artist Georges Braque) the modern art movement called cubism, inventing collage as an artistic technique, and developing assemblage (constructions of various materials) in sculpture. At the time of his death many of his paintings were in his possession, as he had kept off the art market what he didnt need to sell. In addition, Picasso had a considerable collection of the work of other famous artists, some his contemporaries, such as Henri Matisse, with whom he had exchanged works. Since Picasso left no will, his death duties (estate tax) to the French state were paid in the form of his works and others from his collection. These works form the core of the immense and representative collection of the Musee Picasso in Paris. In 2003, relatives of Picasso inaugurated a museum dedicated to him in his birthplace, Malaga, Spain, the Museo Picasso Malaga.(333238)Bidding is closed for this item |

ENGRAVING FROM ELEGIES D OVIDE SUITE BY RODINThis is an engraving on Chiffon de Montvale paper from world renowned artist Auguste Rodin from his Elegies DOvide suite. This example features a sensitive and sculptural drawing of a woman with her legs crossed under her and her left hand holding her foot. Her form has been highlighted with a ginger colored hair and ocher body. This piece is signed in the plate by the artist and hand signed in pencil by Perrichon, the engraver. This was published by Historie de la Liberation, Paris and engraved by L. Perrichon in a limited edition of 250 on December 7, 1935. This piece includes a certificate of authenticity. The framed image measures 28"h x 22"w. Rodin (1840 - 1917) was a French sculptor who is widely considered the only modern equivalent to Michelangelo. He was born to a working class Parisian family and although he attended the Petite Ecole for drawing and painting, he was largely self taught. He was a hardworking sculptor and studied with many masters even working as a designer for the Severes porcelain company. He began to receive commissions and by 1900 had become the most prominent sculptor of his time. His sculpture and his drawings are marked by an intentional unfinished quality that became the hallmark of modern sculpture. It was common for Rodin to make working drawings to be translated into sculpture. He never considered anything finished and would have and engraver such as Perrichon create a copy that he could alter or change at will while retaining the original. One of the best anecdotes of his supreme talent was his life size sculpture called "The Age of Bronze" which was so realistic that it was rejected as being cast from life. In response Rodin created a second male nude titled "St. John the Baptist Preaching" which stands larger than life at 67" tall. He preferred to work with amateur models, street performers, acrobats, strong men, and dancers feeling that their un-contrived postures and poses added realism to the work.(333300)Bidding is closed for this item |

ACRYLIC ON CANVAS BY LISTED ARTIST PETER KEIL DEAN MARTINThis is an Acrylic on canvas by listed German artist Peter Keil titled "Dean Martin". This painting has been signed by Keil in the lower right. He has also signed and titled this piece on the verso. The canvas measures 20"h x 216"w. The frame measures 21.75"h x 17.5"w. Peter Robert Keil is one of Germanys best contemporary painters. His art is hallmarked by dynamic shapes and impressive, vibrant color choices. Keil began his career at the age of 15 studying with Otto Nagel and then attended school at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. Keil became one of the Neo-Expressionist “Grossen Wilden” (Young Fauves), a movement that continued and expounded on the Fauvist movement started by Henri Matisse. Keil shared the limelight with fellow friends and Fauvists Elvira Bach, Rainer Fetting, and George BaseIitz. Later in life Keil, also known as the “Wild Man of Berlin” for his lifestyle and unruly locks of hair, developed friendships and was influenced by Juan Miró and Andy Warhol. He visited Miró’s studio several times which was located high above the Gala Major Bay where the intense sunlight and vivid colors of the Mediterranean region became important sources of inspiration for his color palette. Keil’s work, filled with human forms, figures, faces and torsos is a commentary on human condition and emotions. Keil is fascinated with the stories of people on the fringe of society: the down and out, the pimps, their whores, thieves and the like are the reality behind the façade of human existence and what his keen eye seeks to uncover. The framed image is 27"h x 23"w. Between 1951 and 1960, Dali created 101 watercolor drawings to interpret the Salvador Dali Divine Comedy, a poem by Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). These 100 woodblock engravings were published as a set of six volumes. Divine Comedy was written by Alighieri from 1307 to 1321, and is a masterpiece of Italian Literature. LOST WAX CAST LEOPARD SCULPTURE BY MILOThis leopard lounges casually while releasing a threatening growl. This is a finely sculpted example with his ears back and sculpted spots. The bronze has been mounted on a solid black marble base. This piece is signed Milo in the bronze under the tail and measures 5"h x 11"l x 6.25"w. Milo (b. 1939) was born in Paris but lived most of his childhood in Andalusia, Spain. He began sculpting at the age of seventeen and had several apprenticeships in Spain and America. As a young child he was surrounded by the horses and bullfights so his art leans towards naturalistic animal studies. Lost wax casting has been around for thousands of years. It was first used by the Chinese in 2nd millennium BC and aside from minor mechanization has changed little since its inception. The steps are as follows: The piece is first sculpted in clay and then cut into pieces to facilitate the casting. Each piece is then covered in several thin layers of liquid latex making the mould. The bronze will follow this mould so the latex must adhere to the master perfectly. The next step is to apply fiberglass over the latex to serve as a support for the casting. This is called the Mother Mould. The original sculpture is then removed from the mould (destroying it in the process) and wax is poured into the mold in stages to make a hollow wax version of the completed piece. The final steps are extremely time consuming. The wax mold is repeatedly dipped into alternating mixtures of colloidal silica known as slurry and vats of dry silica that alternate from coarse to fine. Once this has dried around the wax the piece is then placed into a kiln to be cured and melt the wax from the inside. Hence the term, Lost Wax Casting. Then hot bronze (about 2000 degrees Fahrenheit) is poured into the mould, as this dries it cracks the silica mould, destroying it. The individual pieces of bronze are then welded back together. This step takes place in the metal room where the critical talent of the artisan transforms the parts into a hollow bronze duplicate of the original clay model. The final step is to heat the finished piece and apply the patina. The patina process is the result of chemical and heat applied in layers. This is an art in itself and requires years of training to master. No two patinas are exactly alike and each piece can take from 8 to 16 weeks to complete after the initial sculpting. SEMI-ABSTRACT PAINTING BY KRISTINA GARONThis painting is from highly collected artist Kristina Garon. Playful animals and human-like creatures frolic together. Gold is the assertive color in this piece, accentuated with red and yellow. A sea of green serves as the background to the merry-making of the inhabitants of this realm. It is from a series which she describes as “Deliveries from the Universe” painting intuitively from her “third-eye” perspective. While at first glance her work appears to be complete abstractions, upon examination human forms begin emerge and recede. She mixes her colors on the canvas and draws figures that emerge and become abstracted giving a sense of movement and immediacy to her work. There is a connecting theme within her work that the pieces reflect a sense of the choices that people make which have a positive or negative result upon their lives. The unframed image measures 14"h x 11"w. These intricate pieces have been made incorporating a number of techniques and materials, most often used are acrylic paints, permanent marker and oil crayon. This piece is signed and dated on the verso. Kristina was born and raised in Lithuania and trained with a traditional arts education after which her work began to more towards abstractionism. She currently lives and works in the Washington D.C. area and is being represented by galleries in New York and Miami. (901208)Bidding is closed for this item |

He began to earn his living with portraiture in the 1870s; an important work of this period was Madame Charpentier and her Children (1876; Metropolitan Mus.). This page features a the male and female of the species who both reach up to grab a beetle while surrounded by a habitat of water and reeds. This plate is from the 1973 Leipzig Edition by Ariel Press in a special Double Elephant folio size of Audubons works. The page measures approximately 26.12"h x 38.625"l and the framed dimensions are 31"h x 45"l. John James Audubon (1755 - 1851) was born in Les Cayes, Haiti in 1785 to a French naval officer and his Creole mistress. He was raised in France during the French Revolution. In 1803, Audubon fled with his father to the United States because Napoleon was seeking soldiers for his army. Although he studied with the neo-classic master, Jacques-Louis David in France and in America, John Stein in Mississippi, Audubon was largely self-taught as an artist and a scientist. From 1819 - 1839, Audubon cataloged 439 bird species and his notes and paintings are represented in the now-famous John James Audubon: The Watercolors for the Birds of America. The artist, naturalist, explorer, publisher was also an entrepreneur, writer and an active, vocal environmentalist. He realistically and enthusiastically painted wildlife (especially birds) in flying or grounded positions with detailed accuracy and preserved in paint many now-extinct birds for future generations to study and observe. After 1826, Audubon went to Great Britain to raise subscription money and find engravers and publishers for Birds of America, published eventually from 1828-1838 with the help of Scottish engraver William Home Lizars (the early part of the series) and English engraver-publisher Robert Havell, Jr. Between 1831 and 1832, Audubon returned to Florida to paint more birds. From 1845 to 1848, the series Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America was published and made the reputation of this naturalist. Audubon died in New York City in 1851. He was a Fellow of both the Royal Society and the Linnean Society, the top two natural history societies in England at the time.(333306)Leave a Left Bid |
